Barbados Museum and Historical Society

This private organisation in Barbados is open to the general public as a museum that houses a wealth of information pertinent to Barbados' heritage. The Government of Barbados contributes an annual grant and is authorized to appoint a specified number of members of the Museum's Council.

The Barbados Museum and Historical Society is housed  in the former British Military Prison. The upper section of this prison was built in 1817 and the lower section was built in 1853. The prison was extended in 1853 on a much larger scale.

In 1930, these grounds became the headquarters of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society.
