Southern Palms is like the Grand Dame of St. Lawrence Gap and was operating as a luxury hotel in Barbados in the 1970's while tourism was the rising star. Since then many newcomers of all shapes and sizes have entered the hotel sector. With all the choice in today's market, this hotel is probably considered to be in the medium range category but it is well maintained, wonderfully situated and is an excellent all rounder.

By far, the most stunning feature of this large property has to be the wonderful stretch of wide sandy beach that runs along the entire length of the premises and beyond. This spectacular bay is perfect for walking in the cool of the morning and is the backdrop for all kinds of activity. Generally it is very safe for swimming though there are occasional 'red flag' days when caution is advised. Even in these conditions the most eastern section of the beach is shallow and nearly always provides calm waters. If you are the active type, the watersports section can hook you up with windsufing lessons or the new craze paddle surfing (standing up on a surf board and using an oar to propel youself!). If that's too daring take along your boogie board or just enjoy a swim. There are a number of turtles that frequent this bay and you are nearly always sure to see one. Unbeknownst to many, the south coast presents some of the best sun bathing conditions in Barbados as it is ideally located to get the full benefit of the breeze and makes this activity less grueling!

Should you tire of the beach, the large central pool offers a refreshing change of pace and is a popular choice for children. For tennis lovers there are two courts located just across the road and lessons can be booked with the hotel pro but it's best to stick to daylight hours before 6pm as the lights have seen better days.

If you don't want to play a game of shuffleboard or do a bit of putting on the mini-golf course, the activities desk can give you lots of information on other Barbados island activities. There is an excellent Best of Barbados shop on the property as well as a number of other options just a short saunter away along the Gap.

The hotel has nearly 100 rooms spread over 6 buildings all painted in its trademark pink coral colour and prices vary according to location and size. While all rooms have air-conditioning, satellite television, and a small outdoor balcony, the suites are kitted out with a full kitchenette. The hotel provides musical entertainment three nights per week and the Sunday Buffet with accompanying Steelpan Orchestra is well known across the island.
