Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach's official name is Worthing Beach but the majority of Bajan people refer to it as Sandy Beach. Sandy Beach is on the South Coast of Barbados, in the parish of Christ Church, with Accra Beach, Needham's Point Lighthouse to the west, and Dover Beach and Maxwell to the east.

Sandy Beach is a stunning bright white 'tropical postcard' beach that used to stretch endlessly but has been impacted on considerably by the weather and climate. Strong seas and winds, tidal changes and hurricanes have claimed much of the beach back over recent years, but these are cyclical events and it is anticipated that the shallow areas near the reef will soon be filled by sand again and Sandy Beach will return to its former glory. So, if Sandy Beach is narrow and stony when you visit, don't let this put you off going another time - Sandy Beach is still one of the best beaches in Barbados with plenty to offer new visitors.

Perhaps one of the main attractions of Sandy Beach is the sea - brilliant azure, warm like a bath, and with only small to medium waves the protected reef at Sandy Beach is also very safe for swimming. The seabed is intriguingly slanted, resulting in one side of the beach having a shallower sea than the other. The eastern part of Sandy Beach in Barbados is calm and, at no more than two to six feet in depth, this shallow are is ideal for children. This is also a great snorkelling area, as the lovely cool coral reef close to the shore is home to many colourful tropical fish.

The sea is deeper at the western end of Sandy Beach and the waves are perfect for body-surfing or boogie boarding. You might also want to try your hand at diving, sailing, swimming or snorkelling in these more exhilarating waters.

Of course, Sandy Beach is also ideal for sunbathing, playing in the sand with the children, or just relaxing and reading a good book. Beach chairs and umbrellas can be rented on a daily basis, the beach is bordered by shady trees, and there is a permanent volleyball net for anyone to use. There are toilets, showers and changing rooms, picnic tables, and local beach vendors selling beach wear and jewellery. There are two beach bars at the western end of Sandy Beach in Barbados, The Carib Bar & Grill and the Sand Dollar Restaurant, and these are both open throughout the day for drinks and food. The beach also has clearly well considered access for disabled people.
