Stylistically, Arlington House can be described as a white stately building. It was built in the 18th century and was once the home of a wealthy merchant. It has largely been preserved by ensuring that it has been put to good use, through the introduction and continuation of this heritage museum. There is a full verandah on the first floor, with several doors which can open out unto same.
As part of its overall concept, each floor is dedicated to a different theme. One is entitled "Speightstown Memories" and focuses on the 1st settlers to that town. Another is labeled "Plantation Memories" and the focus of this floor is on the role which the period of plantocracy, sugar and the colonisation played on the island. The third one zeroes in on this city of Speightstown once again, but this time from the perspective of the role that it played in the past as a leading port and place of trade for the merchants.
Arlington House is open Mondays to Saturdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. An entrance fee of Barbados $20.00 (US$10) is charged and for adults and half-price for children. To obtain further information, please call (246) 422-4064.
