Earthworks Pottery

Art and craft is a very important component of life on the island of Barbados. In every parish, one will find some artist or artisan, whether local or naturalized resident, who has combined talent and ingenuity to create something special, whether in the medium of ceramics or clay, basketry, shell-work or macramé, just to name a few.

The owners of Earthwork Pottery, located in Edghill Heights, St. Thomas have created such. As one reaches the premises and starts to climb the steep steps to the display area, one of the first things noticed is the exterior of the building which invites and entices. It is painted in bright, cheerful colours and designs, providing more than a hint of what is to be found inside.

pottery1Established in 1983, Earthworks Pottery is well known and utilized in Barbados, the region and internationally as few persons visit the island without making their way to see what they have to offer. It is true to say that many of their pieces can be found in as many private residences as they are in the hotel and restaurant sectors. Each piece is beautifully crafted and there are combinations of every conceivable design and colour. In fact, their records indicate that their creations come in up to 150 shapes and at least 36 different designs. One can purchase mugs, water jugs, dinner ware sets, ice-cream bowls, tissue holders and butter dishes.

The owners and staff have pride in their workmanship and this is testimony to the fact that they have created and refined a brand which is microwavable, dishwasher safe, lead-free. In a snapshot, desirable yet practical!

Adding to the total atmosphere on the Edghill property, there is an Art House Café where light refreshments can be purchased and enjoyed while savouring the country breeze and the still quiet in the air. There is also a small gallery which focuses on showcasing unique pieces by mostly Barbadian artistes.
