Conset Bay

Conset Bay is a sheltered picturesque bay in the Parish of St. John on the East Coast of Barbados, lying between Congor Bay to the north and Skeetes Bay to the south.

Predominantly a fishing area, Conset Bay is worth a visit if only to watch the fishing boats sailing back and forth, have a quiet picnic, do some beachcombing, or simply experience its tranquillity.

An insightful description of Conset Bay's charm is proffered by UK educated poet and visual artist Nick Whittle who based a series of his works on a stay at Conset Bay in Barbados:

"It is the sense of being surrounded by Nature, unspoilt by the presence of hotels and tourists, its isolation. It is the sea at low tide; the gifts it gives of sea fans, conch shells, abandoned shoes, coral, driftwood. As the Bay is sheltered by trees, you have a sense of being alone in a beautiful universe with only the sound of the trees, the waves and the occasional boat engine. It is the ultimate in a peaceful existence". You can see Nick Whittle's accompanying art work at http://nickwhittle.tumblr.com/, and other works of his are periodically exhibited at the Queen's Park Gallery in Barbados.

The waves are perhaps calmer at Conset Bay than at other areas on the East Coast of Barbados but, perhaps because of the ongoing fishing activity, the sea is generally not recommended for swimming.

In 1996, The Barbados Fishing Authorities reported that Conset Bay was the third largest major fish landing site in Barbados, with 37 boats using the site and an annual catch of 81 (eighty one) tons. Conset Bay is also popular with recreational fishers, and visitors to Barbados can observe these individuals casting their lines from the jetty that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean.

Rugged, soaring cliffs frame Conset Bay, and Conset Point at the edge of the bay is a natural and dramatic beauty spot. Watching the Atlantic Ocean breaking onto these cliffs from the small beach is truly awe inspiring, yet there are very few tourists. Visitors to this part of Barbados tend to focus their interests on other attractions and places of interest found within 1 (one) mile of Conset Bay, such as Bath Beach, St. Mark's Church, and Codrington College.

Conset Bay in Barbados is by no means an easy place to access - visitors are unlikely to come across it accidentally if travelling by car and access is mainly via a steep, winding road.
