St. John the Baptist Church

The St. John the Baptist Church is located in the area of Holders Hill in the parish of St. James on the beautiful island of Barbados. This quaint little church is situated in a tranquil setting shaded by mature and stately mahogany trees. This church building was completed in 1867 and consecrated by Bishop Thomas Parry on 15th March, 1870.

The church is situated on lands which were donated to the Anglican diocese of Barbados by T. R. Richards and T. C. Richards, both of the Holders Plantation in the parish of St. James. Interestingly, it was noted in the records of the Diocesan History, that the Diocese was able to choose where they wanted to situate the church and in light of this, the Archdeacon and the rector of the St. James Parish Church along with a select few, all drove around the area on a kind of scouting trip to identify the perfect location for the erection of the church. They eventually selected the spot right at the top of Holders Hill.

The original design for the St. John the Baptist Church in Barbados had incorporated a steeple but that plan was later abandoned because there were just not enough funds available to see it to completion. The St. John the Baptist Church was recently renovated and appears to be quite well maintained.

Today this little church caters to the spiritual needs of the people of the north of the parish of St. James and its environs here on the beautiful island of Barbados.
