AgrofestIn Barbados, the end of February is a time when Barbadians and visitors are opened up to the unique experience of an agricultural festival called Agrofest. The primary purpose of this festival is to stimulate an awareness of the many benefits that can be gained from the agricultural sector on the island.
The Barbados Agrofest is a three (3) day event that is usually held in a large open space with an action-packed timetable. This timetable can include tuk band music and stilt walkers, good ole Bajan food, the displaying of farm and agricultural equipment and exhibits, a farm petting zoo, donkey rides, arts and crafts stalls, children entertainment, dog shows, Barbados Horticultural Society Flower Exhibition, the popular sheep show, a gospel concert, dairy and beef show, special showcase of motor vehicles from local dealers and live entertainment for your listening pleasure.
The Barbados Agrofest is an extremely educational affair as hundreds of students and thousands of adults capitalise on this event in an effort to educate themselves on the many plants, fruits and vegetables available on the island. Over the years, Barbadians have been encouraged to plant their own food even if it is on a small scale of tyre gardens. Such their own vegetables all in an effort to reduce the island's food import bill.
Objectives of Agrofest
The festival has been growing from year to year and a significant growth has been seen in the many young farmers and people who come out to show an interest in farming and the new technologies available to them.
