Racquet Based SportsSome of the more popular racquet based sports in Barbados are sports such as road tennis which has its origins in Barbados as far back as the 1930s. The resurgent sport of lawn tennis which has certainly seen more and more young men and women of Barbados develop a keen interest in and badminton which is not as popular but has undeniably gained recognition in recent times. Such sports augur well for the wellness of Barbadians as fitness is an integral element of the developing minds and bodies of the country's people. In recent times, racquet based sports such as lawn tennis has been drawing lots of attention to Barbados. In November of 2009, Barbados hosted a two-day event entitled "Tennis 'pon de rock". American professional tennis player Serena Williams graced the tennis courts at the Wildey Gymnasium to take part in the biggest exhibition game that has ever taken place in Barbados. She was joined by world number five US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki, in a mixed doubles game along with two Barbadian based players. |
