Plastic SurgeryFor most people, plastic surgery is almost synonymous with Hollywood as the first thing that comes to mind more often than not is the thought of the rich and famous making some kind of aesthetic adjustment to their appearance. Though this may be true to a certain extent, there's a lot more to the topic of plastic surgery than just the cosmetic side of it. There's also the reconstructive side of it that specifically deals with rectifying imperfections on the face or body.
Once there is no occurrence of physical imperfections on the part of a patient, cosmetic surgery can be used wholly as an attempt to aestitically enhance the patient's appearance, while reconstructive surgery aims at rectifying any physical deformities that might have been as a result of a defect at birth or some form of sickness.
According the The American Board of Plastic Surgery's website: Plastic surgery deals with repair, reconstruction, or replacement of physical defects of form or function involving the skin, musculoskeletal system, craniomaxillofacial structures, hand, extremities, breast and trunk, external genitalia or cosmetic enhancement of these areas of the body… The plastic surgeon uses cosmetic surgical principles both to improve overall appearance and to optimize the outcome of reconstructive procedures. Special knowledge and skill in the design and surgery of grafts, flaps, free tissue transfer and replantation is necessary… Anatomy, physiology, pathology, and other basic sciences are fundamental to the specialty… Competency in plastic surgery implies an amalgam of basic medical and surgical knowledge, operative judgement, technical expertise, ethical behavior, and interpersonal skills to achieve problem resolution and patient satisfaction.
